Cebu sustains damage from waves brought by Bagyong Uwan

MANILA -- Although not directly hit by Typhoon Uwan, many areas in Cebu sustained minor damage from big waves intensified by the typhoon.In San Remigio, several structures were damaged and trees were toppled. A riprap was also reported damaged due to the high tide and the big waves, according to Vice Mayor Alife Corominas-Gonzales. No one was reported hurt from the incident.Meanwhile, in the nearby town of Medellin, the Kawit Port’s docking area was also damaged. “Guba kaayo (It is really destroyed),” said Rocheian Reyes, who shared a video showing how big waves battered the port.Over in Caubian Island, Lapu-Lapu City, a huge ship drifted towards the island’s seawall. According to village officials, the ship had been taking shelter in Bohol. “Kusog ang hangin ug dako ang dagat (The wind is strong and the sea rose),” said Kathy Meyer, Barangay Kagawad.The Philippine Coast Guard is yet to inspect the area and give assistance on how to remove the stranded vessel.<div> </div><div>REELING IN FROM TINO</div>Meanwhile, residents in the town of Liloan continue to reel from the effects of Typhoon Tino that hit Cebu on November 4.With relief efforts seemingly sparse, most of them are by the road waiting for assistance from private individuals.“Magsige miggukod gukod. Nya makapila nami, biyaan mi. (We keep on chasing them. When we fall in line, they leave),” says Libi Mahinay, resident of Barangay Cotcot.For Maria Dita Wagas, a senior citizen, her body is already too tired waiting for aid.“Gikapoy na akong tuhod, sakit na kaayo. (My knees are also tired, it is painful),” she said.The local government unit is continuing its validation and clearing operations, saying that matters of foul odor “have already been addressed.”Based on the latest count over the weekend, Typhoon Tino left 147 casualties and displaced more 200,000 individuals.
