The Samahan ng Magbabangus ng Pangasinan on Monday sounded the alarm on possible supply issues with bangus fingerlings a week after the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.Samapa president Christopher Aldo Sibayan said bangus producers in Dagupan, Binmaley, Lingayen, Bugallon, and Labrador suffered losses due to the super typhoon.“Nung dumaan na bagyo, ang malaki po na natamaan ay central Pangasinan - Dagupan, Binmaley, Lingayen, Bugallon and Labrador - all the way to Western Pangasinan. Ang hard hit po natin ay central, marami po sa ating natamaan at nag di dwindle ang supply…” he said in a DZMM interview.Sibayan said western Pangasinan was mostly spared by Uwan, which means there will be enough supply of bangus in the coming months.“Ang magiging concern lang natin ay fingerlings - ibig sabihin ‘yung maliliit na bangus na 3-4 inches length na dini-distribute sa palaisdaan at fish cages na pinapalaki,” he said. Binmaley is one of the biggest producers of bangus fingerlings in the country, Sibayan said, with supply of bangus from Pangasinan reaching as far as Malabon and Navotas in Metro Manila. The provincial government of Pangasinan earlier declared a state of calamity after Uwan’s onslaught affected 59,197 families from 441 barangays in the province.Sibayan said he cannot discount the possibility of price increases in the coming months, adding that bangus producers should restock supply to prevent a shortage.Samapa is currently coordinating with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regional office to address the supply issue with bangus producers.
