<p>MANILA — The Bureau of Corrections said Thursday it aimed to construct regional prison facilities in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and the Cordilleras.</p><p>These are on top of other facilities that the prison bureau is planning to establish in other parts of Metro Manila, BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang said.</p><p>“Kasi sa mandate namin, iyong RA 10575, we are allowed to put regional prison facilities, so wala pa kasi sa Regions I, II, III Cordillera – so, that will be our next target,” Catapang said in a televised briefing.</p><p>“Pero mayroon na kaming nakakausap na willing naman dito sa north of Metro Manila and then south of Metro Manila we are just firming it up, makakakuha kami ng malaking lugar kasi ang balak namin by 2028 ay isasara na itong New Bilibid Prison, ililipat ito outside of Metro Manila.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/1/5/bucor-relieves-4-personnel-after-stabbing-in-bilibid-1222">BuCor relieves 4 personnel after stabbing in Bilibid</a></div><p>Catapang said the construction of new prisons and the digitization of records were part of ongoing efforts to rectify decades of neglect for the country’s prison facilities.</p><p>“I think we are on track because mukhang nakita naman ng gobyerno that there is really an honest to goodness endeavor on the part of this administration or the leadership now in BuCor to really turn around the problem,” the official said.</p><p>“We want to make sure that we will be an income-generating institution.
