MANILA — Former journalist and congresswoman Sol Aragones has won the gubernatorial seat in Laguna on her second attempt.

Aragones defeated two incumbent congressmen and the current vice governor, considered her toughest rivals in the race.

She was officially proclaimed as governor by the Provincial Board of Canvassers after garnering 635,570 votes.

Coming in second was Second District Rep. Ruth Hernandez, wife of incumbent Governor Ramil Hernandez, with 548,286 votes.

Santa Rosa City Rep. Dan Fernandez placed third with 285,373 votes, while incumbent Vice Governor Karen Agapay came in fourth with 114,758 votes.

Fernandez conceded defeat on Monday night and congratulated Aragones.

Aragones said her top priority was improving Laguna’s healthcare services. She said she planned to build free pharmacies in every town and city and enhance public hospital services.

“Napakalaking impluwensiya ng pagiging health reporter ko sa ABS-CBN sa loob ng seven years para makita ko ang pangangailangan pangkalusugan. Nakita ko ang mahihirap na namamatay nang walang kalaban-laban,” Aragones said.

“Ipagbabawal natin ang matataray sa mga hospital, hindi lang sa ospital kundi sa mga opisina ng gobyerno,” she added.

She said she would push for scholarship programs and boost tourism to generate more jobs.

Aragones previously served as the Laguna's Third District representative from 2013 to 2016. She ran for governor in 2022 and lost to Hernandez.
