CIDG photo release </div>MANILA — The police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has arrested a Maguindanao del Sur mayor and his wife over their alleged link to the 2024 ambush and death of a vice mayor.In a media readout, the CIDG said combined law enforcement agents nabbed South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur Mayor Reynalbert Insular and his wife Janet in Barangay Making in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte on Tuesday.The arrest was by virtue of a warrant of arrest for Murder, Frustrated Murder and Attempted Murder issued by Cotabato City Regional Trial Court Branch 27 on May 19.The two are among twelve accused of participation as “masterminds” in the planning and orchestration of <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/regions/2024/8/3/vice-mayor-ng-south-upi-at-pamangkin-patay-sa-pananambang-1802">the ambush of Vice Mayor Roldan Benito and his security aide, Weng Marcos</a>, in Sitio Linao in Barangay Pandan in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur on August 2, 2024.Also injured during the incident were Barangay Chairperson Analyn Benito — the vice mayor’s wife — and their 11-year-old child, both of whom sustained gunshot wounds. Insular, who was elected vice mayor in the May 12 elections, and Janet, who lost her mayoral bid, are being held at a CIDG custodial facility in Cotabato City.
