Dike collapse triggers flooding in Pampanga

PAMPANGA -- Several barangays in Floridablanca, Pampanga were submerged in waist-deep floodwaters after parts of a dike collapsed due to heavy rains on Monday morning.Pampanga had experienced continuous rainfall overnight.In Floridablanca, parts of the dikes in Barangays Maligaya and Fortuna were damaged around 9:00 a.m., causing floodwaters to rush onto the main roads and surrounding areas. The floods reached waist-deep levels.As a result, roads in Barangays Maligaya and San Antonio were impassable earlier this morning.The floodwaters started to recede when rains began to ease, and are now just knee-deep in some barangays.As of now, only Barangay San Antonio in Floridablanca remains impassable to light vehicles.According to Mayor Mike Galang, seven families have been evacuated for their safety and have already received food packs.Meanwhile, in the town of Sasmuan, the town center was also flooded, making travel difficult for motorists.According to the Pampanga Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), classes at all levels—public and private—are suspended today in the following areas: Macabebe, San Simon, Apalit, Sasmuan, City of San Fernando, Sta. Rita, Arayat, Guagua, Sta. Ana, Bacolor, Lubao, Candaba, Mexico, Floridablanca, Porac, and San Luis.In Minalin, modular distance learning was implemented for elementary and high school public schools.In Sto. Tomas, classes from kindergarten to Grade 12 are suspended.In Masantol, there will be no classes for children until tomorrow.
