Three barges being towed by two tugboats ran aground near the shoreline of Barangay Talisay in Calaca City, Batangas last Saturday due to bad weather brought by the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm Crising.According to Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard, the barges were battered by huge waves, causing them to run aground.“When they are taking shelter sa may vicinity  ng Calaca sa Batangas yung linya  nila nagsnapp sa lakas ng alon at hangin doon sa area and eventually na ground ang tatlong barge na yan,” said Tuvilla.All 21 crew members were safely rescued.The barges came from Negros, carrying 13 tons of molasses, which were supposed to be delivered to a distillery in Balayan town.Tuvilla confirmed there was a minor leak of molasses, but assured the public there is no cause for concern.“Wala siyang kargang fuel ,molasses ang karga niya” Tuvilla explained.“Organic siya, may bahagyang ano, siyempre nafill-up-an ng tubig yung mga bodega ng barge  eventually may nagspill pero the good thing is organic sya na substance, yung area chineck na rin ng marine environment kasama ng local na pamahalaan ng Calaca,” he added.Once the weather improves, efforts to pull the stranded barges will begin.
