Vast green rice fields in Barangay Victoria, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro have vanished following massive floods brought by recent storms and monsoon rains. A flood control project built to protect the farmlands did just the opposite. Not only did it fail to prevent floodwater from reaching the crops, it buried hectares of rice fields in gravel and sand. The aggregates, used as fillers for the dike, were carried by flood to the fields when the structures collapsed. For farmer Amil Bermud, the loss of his rice field means hardship for his family in the coming months. “Yan ay halos kasing halaga na ng buhay ko  dahil diyan kami kumukuha ng aming ikinabubuhay” Bermud said. Harvest season was supposed to begin at the end of the month, and the income from it had already been allocated for the family’s needs. “Dalawang buwan po namin pinaghirapan yan aming mga palay na yan sa isang iglap. Nawala dahil sa ginawa nilang concrete dike na ito” said Cesar Gorospe, another farmer. According to the farmers, more than 150 hectares of rice fields were damaged. “Wala na po makukuha diyan,” Gorospe added. Barangay Victoria is known for vast rice fields where most residents rely on farming for their livelihood. Farmers are now hoping the damaged flood control projects will be repaired immediately and rebuilt stronger so their crops will not suffer the same fate.
