Authorities are investigating the alleged hazing of a number of criminology students during reception rites at a college in Kidapawan City on August 23, 2025.A report received by the Kidapawan City Police on August 24 said the incident took place at a public high school in Barangay Kalaisan.The report also said around a hundred students from Central Mindanao Colleges were subjected to various activities as part of a tradition before they begin their internship.“Sa seven stations na ‘to, sir, dadaan talaga diyan ‘yong mga interns nila. May pinapagawa sa kanila every stages na different physical exercises like jumping jack, push ups, gano’n,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Dominador Palgan, officer-in-charge of the Kidapawan City Police Station.The college’s dean, Dr. Rolando Demaulo Poblador, claimed he conducted an inspection at the event beforehand but was unaware that senior students were hiding harmful chemicals.“Without my knowledge pala, tinago nila sa mga sasakyan nila. Tapos during the event, secretly kinuha nila. Aywan ko kung anong klaseng kemikal ‘yon,” he said.Poblador also admitted there may have been tension between senior and junior students prior to the event.“Hindi ko alam na may misunderstanding pala ‘yong senior tsaka junior. Tapos nagalit ‘yong mga senior kasi ‘yong junior, mayabang naman. Sisiw lang daw ang reception kaya na-touch naman ang ego ng senior.”Nineteen students suffered skin burns from the chemicals.“According sir, ano daw yan ‘yong battery solution. ‘Yon ang in-spray, sir, sa katawan ng mga estudyante kaya nalapnos ‘yong iba, sir…Parang hinalo siya. Suka, sili, tapos hinalo ‘yong battery solution. Parang gano’n ‘yong mixture ng element na na ini-spray sa likod, sir,” Palgan furthered.Upon learning of the injuries, Poblador immediately stopped the activity, and ensured the affected students received first aid.The students were later advised to undergo full medical examinations.Authorities already identified five suspects who facilitated the activity. “Dating classmate din ito ng mga estudyante din, sir, ng nga interns. ‘Yong mga intern kasi, sir, parang may subject sila na bumagsak sila kaya naunang grumaduate itong mga seniors nila. Sila na ang nag-handle ng reception nila,” Palgan said.Authorities are coordinating with school officials, and the suspects may face charges for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law.“‘Yon pa ang tinitingnan natin, sir, na mga anggulo kung may kakulangan din ang school dito, sir,” Palgan added.Poblador said he has met with the parents of the victims.“Na-meet ko na ang lahat ng mga parents. Pinuntahan ko isa-isa sa kanila. Kinausap ko na sila regarding the incident. Tapos sabi ko, rest assured na hindi na ‘to mangyayari and I will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also pledged its support for the victims and their families.“‘Yong pag-coordinate sa families ng victims and the victims themselves and the witnesses para po ma-build kung plano ng mga biktima na mag-file agad ng kaso... And we can also hold our own independent parallel investigation on the incident,” said Atty. Keysie Morales Gomez, Regional Director of CHR-12.The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident as of this writing.
