Jeff Caparas, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA — Police on Tuesday arrested three suspects, including a former policeman, in connection to the robbery of a 71-year-old businessman in Barangay Poblacion, Santa Maria, Bulacan.According to Sta Maria Municipal Police Station chief Lt. Col. Volaire Rivera, the incident occurred when the victim had just alighted from his vehicle carrying a plastic bag containing cash intended for bank deposit to pay suppliers.“Habang pagbaba niya po ng kanyang sasakyan, mula po sa likod may humablot po ng pera na hawak-hawak niya, tinutukan po siya ng baril, at umalis kaagad yung dalawang suspect,” Rivera said. Rivera said P550,000 in cash was taken by the suspects.A traffic enforcer witnessed the incident and immediately alerted the police, who launched a dragnet operation. The suspects were later flagged down in Barangay Catmon where they were caught with the stolen money and the firearm used in the crime.Rivera said the third suspect acted as a spotter, posing as a fruit vendor who had been frequenting the victim’s residence.“Siya po yung nagsisilbing pointer kung sino ho yung magiging subject po nila,” he said.The arrested suspects include a former policeman who was dismissed from service in 2004 after going AWOL. Rivera confirmed that the ex-cop’s firearm was used in the crime, although its license had already expired in 2023.Aside from the stolen cash, police also recovered a Glock 22 Gen.4 caliber .40 pistol with a magazine containing 12 live hollow-point rounds and a pink Yamaha Mio MXi 125 motorcycle without a license plate believed to have been used as the getaway vehicle.Police investigation also revealed that one of the suspects had prior robbery cases, while no previous records were found for the former police officer.Charges of robbery and illegal possession of firearms under RA 10591 are set to be filed against the suspects.<div> </div>
