Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Mitra Ampatuan survived an assassination attempt after his armored vehicle fended off a grenade attack by armed suspects Sunday morning.CCTV footage showed suspects disembarking a white minivan and using a grenade launcher on Ampatauan’s black SUV in Barangay Poblacion at 6:20 a.m. Sunday.“Kung di armored ang sasakyan, wala nang buhay si Mayor,” Anwar Kuit Emblawa, the mayor’s executive secretary and spokesperson, told DZMM.“Sa awa ng Diyos, ligtas, kahit galos, wala kahit galos si Mayor,” he added.Two of the mayor’s security escorts were wounded in the attack but are now stable, he said.Emblawa said Sunday’s grenade attack was the fourth attempt on Ampatuan’s life.He said the 3 attempts were conducted in 2010, 2014 and 2019, adding that Ampatuan was wounded in the last 2 attacks, prompting him to start using armored vehicles.The aide said he expects a swift investigation in the incident, noting that the CCTV footage could provide leads.“Nangyari in broad daylight, maraming tao sa paligid…Nakita nila nakaparada ito sa tabing national highway kung saan nandoon ‘yung fruit vendors,” he said, adding he expects witnesses to help in the probe.He declined to say if the attack was politically motivated.Emblawa noted the mayor is already back at work despite the incident. “Isa yan sa mga kakaharapin ng mga politiko,” he said.
