Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- The Office of Civil Defense ordered mandatory evacuations in areas in the six-kilometer permanent danger zone around the Mayon Volcano, which is now at Alert Level 3.The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the volcano&#x27;s status on Tuesday afternoon, after signs of an ongoing magmatic eruption intensified.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/1/6/phivolcs-to-raise-mayon-volcano-alert-level-3-1314">READ: Phivolcs raises Mayon Volcano to alert level 3</a></div>According to OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo, 729 families, or 2,889 individuals, have been evacuated from the PDZ.These residents come from 30 barangays across Tabaco City, Ligao City, Legazpi City, and the municipalities of Malilipot, Santo Domingo, Camalig, Guinobatan, and Bacacay.&quot;Kapag Alert Level 3, mandatory evacuation na po doon sa mga nasa permanent danger zones. Mataas po iyong lebel ng paghahanda na isinasagawa natin,&quot; Castillo said.&quot;In terms sa protocol, ang ating mga lokal na pamahalaan doon ay merong contingency plan pagdating dito sa mga activities ng Mayon Volcano,&quot; he added.Authorities continue to strictly enforce the no-entry policy within the six-kilometer danger zone, particularly in parts of Tabaco City, Santo Domingo, Malilipot, and areas near Legazpi City. Phivolcs also reiterated its advisory to avoid airspace near the volcano due to the risk posed by ash and volcanic debris.According to Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division Chief Ma. Antonia Bornas, they observed sustained lava extrusion, frequent incandescent rockfalls, visible crater glow, and the occurrence of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known in Bicol as &quot;uson.&quot;These fast-moving, superheated flows of volcanic gas, ash, and rock fragments are considered the most dangerous hazard currently posed by Mayon.These parameters collectively point to a dangerous escalation of unrest, Bornas said.Phivolcs warned that while the most likely scenario resembles the 2023 eruption, characterized by lava effusion and PDCs, there remains a slim chance of minor explosive eruptions and a possible escalation to Alert Level 4 if activity intensifies.Ashfall and volcanic smog may affect parts of Sorsogon and Masbate provinces, as prevailing winds are blowing westward.Phivolcs said it is unlikely that ash and smoke will reach Metro Manila under current conditions, though wider dispersal remains possible if activity escalates.<div> </div>
