The Sr. San Lucas Chapel in Sitio Balete, Barangay Santiago, Caraga town, Davao Oriental, was the lone structure reported damaged in the province following the magnitude-6.4 earthquake that struck Manay, Davao Oriental, on Wednesday morning. Photos shared by the Caraga Fire Station showed damage to the chapel, where parts of the concrete wall, as well as the doors and windows, collapsed. Portions of the concrete wall at the back of the structure were also damaged. Authorities have declared the chapel unsafe for use. Atty. Lovella Fe Tacder, provincial information officer of the Davao Oriental provincial government, said no evacuees were recorded following the latest tremor. Class suspensions remain in effect in several towns in Davao Oriental, including Manay, Caraga, Tarragona, and Boston. Meanwhile, Eduardo Lauron, officer-in-charge of PHIVOLCS XI, said a total of 173 aftershocks had been recorded as of 8 a.m. Thursday, five of which were felt. He added that there are 18 active faults and trenches in the Davao Region and noted that no one can predict whether more strong earthquakes will occur, especially after the &quot;doublet quake&quot; that hit Manay in October 2025. “Earthquakes cannot really be predicted. The only thing to do regarding these strong earthquakes happening is to strengthen disaster preparedness—to be prepared at all times,” he said in a media interview. Tacder also noted that the latest quake revived trauma and fear among residents who had experienced strong tremors in recent months. She added that the tent city established for those affected by the magnitude-7.4 earthquake in October 2025 remains in place.
