<p>CEBU<strong> (3rd UPDATE) </strong>— The death toll in the landslide that hit a private landfill Thursday in Barangay Binaliw in Cebu City has reached two, with more than 30 people still missing, authorities said Friday.</p><p>The number came from the Cebu City Fire Station, one of the primary responders in the tragedy.</p><p>Rescuers have already plucked 14 people out of the landslide. Of the number, two people died, and the rest were rushed to the hospital.</p><p>The rest of the landfill&#x27;s employees have been accounted for.</p><p>&quot;This is not like other landslides that you can just excavate. If you pull from the top, the bottom is soft. Let&#x27;s say there is a person there, when you get the debris, it might get worse,&quot; Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said in Cebuano.</p><p>Methane gas from leachate — the liquid that leaches from landfills — also makes it difficult for rescuers to cut the metal.</p><p>The Philippine Coast Guard in the Central Visayas meanwhile said it has deployed its K9 Force to help with search and rescue operations.</p><p>&quot;The team arrived at the site and coordinated with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. During Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, one Coast Guard Working Dog Sagbayan registered a positive indication, subject to validation and confirmation,&quot; it said.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>&#x27;SEPTEMBER 2025 EARTHQUAKE MADE LANDFILL UNSTABLE&#x27;</strong></div><div><strong><br/></strong></div><p>Based on the city&#x27;s initial investigation, the foundation of the landfill was altered after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu on September 30.</p><p>&quot;The moment it rains, because of the large volume of water, it seeps into the underground of the landfill and then again, alters the foundation,&quot; Archival said.</p><p>Their strategy now is to divide the 500 responders into four groups.</p><p>The mayor confirmed that responders had detected signs of life and that those who had been reached were given oxygen tanks.</p><p>Relatives are already restless as they wait for updates on their loved ones.</p><p>One of them is Michelle Lumapas, who is waiting for word of his brother, who works in the engineering department of the landfill.</p><p>&quot;I could not understand my emotions.
