Motorists along the curved stretch of road known as Dragon Tail in the town of Claveria, Misamis Oriental, were shocked after witnessing a horse being dragged by a truck on Sunday.In a video that went viral on social media and was shared by Vincent Piscos with ABS-CBN News, a horse can be seen tied to the back of a truck, running in an apparent attempt to keep up with the vehicle’s speed.In another video shared by Titshuyakoh 2.0, the horse was seen lying on the road, visibly exhausted. The uploader said the horse’s legs were bleeding.Shiru Moto, one of the motorists who witnessed the incident, said he first saw the horse while traveling from Gingoog City and initially thought it would only be dragged for a short distance. However, he was shocked to see that the horse had been dragged all the way to Claveria, an adjacent municipality.“Luoy kaayo. Daghan kaayo curve didto na pa-downhill ug pa-uphill, pero wala jud niya (truck driver) atimana unsa na ang kahimtang sa kabayo. Pag-abot sa Dragon Tail, didto na dayon namo nakita na wala na kaantos ang kabayo, nihigda na jud, galugos na og kuha og hangin,” he told ABS-CBN News.(Nakakaawa talaga. Pagdating sa Dragon Tail, doon na namin nakita na hindi na kinaya ng kabayo, nakahiga na ito at hirap nang huminga.)The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) called on social media users to help prosecute those responsible for the alleged act of animal cruelty.PAWS said it was ready to assist in the filing of a case.“We are appealing to witnesses of this cruel act of a horse... to report to law enforcement authorities so that the driver of the vehicle can be identified and a case filed for violation of The Animal Welfare Act,” PAWS said in a Facebook post.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/6/3/paws-flags-proposed-house-amendments-to-animal-welfare-act-1812">PAWS flags proposed House amendments to Animal Welfare Act</a></div>Jose Castro, the owner of the horse, denied claims that the animal was dragged, saying the incident was part of a controlled training method that he has used for more than 10 years in caring for horses.He said the horse, named Kabang, is a three-year-old castrated male used for ranch work and trail-ride recreation. Castro also shared recent videos of the horse on social media.“Besides, ang kabayo can run up to 71 kilometers per hour to 120 km range. Ang kabayo na yan, tumatakbo mismo at ginagabayan lang ng sasakyan. Hindi ito hinila,” he said.Castro also denied reports that the horse died, explaining that the moment when the animal was seen lying on the road was due to lateral recumbency, which he said is normal for horses when they are tired.“I-challenge ko yung mga nag-accuse na in-abuse ang kabayo na ipa-check up sa vet dahil so far okay ang kabayo.
