<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779249425558viber_image_2026-05-20_11-27-07-712.jpg" style="width:960px;display:block;height:auto" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/>Photo courtesy of Abra de Ilog police </div>A 61-year-old construction worker died after a crane collapsed at a bridge construction project in Barangay Udalo, Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.According to Patrolman Bronze Dizon, investigator of the Abra de Ilog Municipal Police Station, the victim — a resident of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro — was declared dead on arrival at the Abra de Ilog Community Hospital.Investigation revealed that the crane suddenly collapsed while lifting a concrete girder that was being transferred to another location at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.The cause of the crane collapse is still unclear.The crane&#x27;s steel cable struck the construction worker who was positioned below the boom to guide the operator during the lifting operation.Actual video footage of the incident taken by residents showed that the victim was not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at the time of the incident.Dizon said authorities were also investigating possible safety protocol violations.The construction company handling the bridge project has yet to issue a statement.Police arrested the crane operator, who is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.Dizon said the victim’s family has no intention of filing a case, provided that the company will assist them with expenses and provide financial support.The bridge is part of the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/1/28/dpwh-vows-probe-over-decade-long-delay-of-mindoro-circumferential-road-1252">Abra de Ilog–Puerto Galera Circumferential Road project</a>, which aims to connect Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.It hit the headlines following complaints that the structure had remained <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/1/28/dpwh-vows-probe-over-decade-long-delay-of-mindoro-circumferential-road-1252">unfinished for nearly a decade.</a>In February, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon personally inspected the bridge and issued an ultimatum for its completion by June 2026. The DPWH said it “ordered an immediate cease and desist order” on the lifting operations of the firm in charge of the construction. “Secretary Vince Dizon has also directed the DPWH-Mimaropa Regional Office to investigate the incident to determine if it was caused by material fatigue, overloading, or lack of equipment maintenance and if comprehensive safety protocols were implemented,” the agency said. “Legacy Construction Corp. was also ordered to submit updated third-party heavy equipment certificates and maintenance logs for all cranes on site as part of the equipment audit,” it said. It added the contractor could “face severe penalties if results of the investigation reveal violations of Occupational Safety and Health Standards.” <div><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CjscwCAZCRk?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> </div>
