OVP photo release</div>MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday visited the wake of several victims of magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked Southern Mindanao on June 8.In a series of photos provided by the Office of the Vice President, Duterte can be seen personally condoling with the families of spouses Jimmy and Rose Batino in Purok Sto. Niño, Barangay Tuyan, in Malapatan, Sarangani. Citing accounts from relatives and residents, the OVP said the couple was “near the shoreline cleaning their truck when the powerful tremor triggered ground fissures and soil collapse in the area. The incident reportedly caused them to be swept into the water, resulting in their drowning.”<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/10/mindanao-quake-death-toll-climbs-to-45-disaster-agency-0842">Mindanao quake death toll climbs to 45—disaster agency</a></div>Duterte also offered prayers to the deceased, according to her office.In an ambush interview in General Santos City, the vice president expressed her condolences to all the families of the quake victims.“Kanina pinaabot ko doon sa mga pamilya ng mga namatayan ang pakikiramay ko at ng buong opisina ng Office of the Vice President kasama na ang pakikiramay ng aming pamilya sa lahat ng mga kamag-anak ng namatay,” she said.  The vice president also underscored the importance of knowing precautions to save oneself from the effects of earthquake.“At pinaabot ko rin ‘yung mensahe na hindi natin alam kung kailan mangyayari ang lindol ‘no. Wala siyang warning. Kaya ang pinakamabisa na paghahanda, panlaban na magawa natin ay &#x27;yung paghahanda natin na kung ano yung dapat nating gawin kung nandyan na ‘yung lindol para hindi tayo nagpa-panic at laging nasa isip natin kung ano yung mga dapat nating gawin pag nandyan na ‘yung groundshaking,” Duterte noted. <div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/6/9/what-we-know-about-the-magnitude-7-8-mindanao-earthquake-2032">What we know about the magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake</a></div>Earlier in the day, Duterte was in Cotabato City for the distribution of rice food bags to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents and fisherfolk as part of its Relief for Indigents and Individuals in Crises and Emergencies (RIICE) assistance program.She also led the opening of the OVP’s pop-up exhibit highlighting the country’s vice presidents at Rojas Central Elementary School. The OVP’s Southern Mindanao satellite office earlier deployed food trucks to provide hot meals to first responders and rescuers as well as rice feed bags and food and non-food boxes to quake victims.
