<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17815026379331781502633464.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left"></span></span></span></div><p>Police gather in front of a collapsed fast food restaurant after an 7.8 magnitude earthquake in General Santos City on June 8, 2026. Edwin Espejo, AFP</p><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Monday reported the number of fatalities from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked parts of Mindanao on June 8 has reached 65 after the tremor toppled infrastructure and triggered landslides in the southern and central parts of the country’s second-most populous island.</p><p>According to OCD Deputy Administrator Raffy Alejandro, most of the fatalities were caused by landslides and falling debris, particularly in Davao Occidental and Sarangani provinces, as well as General Santos City in South Cotabato.</p><p>Meanwhile, the search continues for 36 people, specifically those believed to have been buried by landslides. Nonetheless, Alejandro said they can no longer detect signs of life in the landslide areas.</p><p>“Mahirap po kasi kung makapunta kayo doon, it’s really bundok at ang dami pong landslide talaga na nangyari. But we’re trying hard na ma-recover itong mga bodies na ito,” he said.</p><p>In one sitio in Davao Occidental, responders paused search operations after determining that there were likely no more survivors, allowing resources to be redirected to other response efforts.</p><p>“I was there yesterday sa Jose Abad Santos – isang area doon ay nag-call off na ang search and rescue kasi nga napakalaki, bundok kasi talaga ‘yong bumaba na landslide. So, it’s very hard. Hindi po maka-akyat ‘yong mga equipment at talagang mano-mano,” Alejandro said.</p><p>Jose Abad Santos is one of the hardest-hit municipalities in Davao Occidental.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/6/12/days-after-mindanao-quake-families-remain-on-the-streets-waiting-for-relief-1832">Days after Mindanao quake, families remain on the streets, waiting for relief</a></div><p>Responders are also making adjustments as they factor in bad weather conditions that could hamper operations, with thunderstorms and rain showers potentially triggering more landslides in quake-hit communities.</p><p>Over the weekend, flash floods were reported in some areas, delaying relief operations, according to Alejandro.</p><p>“Because of the earthquake, meron po tayong tinatawag na damming effect which might cause flash floods later on — isa ‘yan sa tinitingnan natin,” the OCD official said.</p><p>“Ina-assess ng Phivolcs and MGB ‘yong buong areas na apektado kasi medyo malaki po ‘yong area, nagkaroon tayo ng lifting sa dagat, so nagkaroon po ng changes sa ating mga areas…which might alter ‘yong mga usual na daanan ng mga stream,” he added.</p><p>At least 176,186 families or 738,386 individuals were affected by the earthquake, displacing thousands of residents.</p><p>Out of the total, at least 3,180 families or 14,161 individuals were being served inside 37 evacuation centers, while others sought shelter elsewhere.</p><p>Meanwhile, 26 roads and 13 bridges remain impassable due to earthquake damage, while power and water supply disruptions, as well as communication line outages, continue to affect some areas.</p><p>Alejandro noted that damage to public and private infrastructure has so far reached P1.13 billion.</p><p>Aftershocks across parts of Mindanao also continue to be recorded.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/6/14/deadly-mindanao-quake-raised-seabed-by-up-to-two-meters-1710">Deadly Mindanao quake raised seabed by up to two meters</a></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO:</strong></div><div style="text-align:center"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MJZm8ZIietM?si=EciS_JQS7ju03RVj" title="YouTube video player" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><br/></div>
