Edwin Espejo, AFP</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA &mdash; A movement in the Cotabato Trench caused the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao killing at least one person, collapsing buildings, and sparking tsunami warnings across the region, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.&nbsp;</p><p>The same trench caused the 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake and tsunami that left thousands dead, Phivolcs research specialist Winchelle Sevilla.</p><p>&ldquo;Aktibo ang Cotabato Trench. Marami tayong nare-record dito na earthquakes, maliliit. In fact, last January hanggang May, nagkaroon ng mga seismic swarms. Naramdaman ito ng mga kababayan natin sa Sultan Kudarat,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/6/8/tsunami-warning-issued-following-m7-0-quake-in-gensan-0820">One dead, &#39;buildings collapsed&#39; in Mindanao quake: police&nbsp;</a></div><p>Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning at 7:36 a.m. and observed the first wave of tsunami minutes later in Maasim and Kiamba Sarangani. &nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;Batay doon sa initial records natin mga umabot ng around 1 meter yung taas ng alon at patuloy pa rin ang pagpasok ng tsunami waves. Tandaan po natin na ang tsunami ay series of waves &lsquo;to.
