Gen. Romano Cardiño, Negros Island Region chief, said a security guard conducting a routine inspection at the school’s exit gate on Monday noticed suspicious items inside the student’s bag and recovered two plastic sachets containing suspected shabu.The incident was immediately reported to the Bacolod City Police Office’s Police Station 3, whose personnel, together with members of the City Intelligence Unit, responded to the school.Authorities withheld the identity of the student in compliance with Republic Act No. 9344 or the amended Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.The minor was placed under protective custody and will be referred to the appropriate Social Development Center for intervention and disposition in accordance with laws governing children in conflict with the law.Police said the seized suspected illegal drugs were properly inventoried and will be submitted to a forensic laboratory for qualitative examination.Investigators are also conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the source of the suspected shabu and whether the minor may have been exploited by individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking.“Our schools must remain safe spaces for learning and development. This incident highlights the vital role of school security personnel and the importance of remaining vigilant,” Cardiño said.“We assure the public that PRO NIR (Police Regional Office - Negros Island Region) will continue to intensify anti-illegal drug operations while ensuring that children involved in such incidents are treated in accordance with the law, with due consideration for their rights, welfare, and rehabilitation,” he added.The PRO-NIR also urged the public to report information on illegal drug activities to the nearest police station or through the SAFE NIR Dial 911 emergency hotline as part of efforts to keep communities and schools free from illegal drugs.
