<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1786851407003viber_image_2026-08-16_11-05-39-269.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/>Philippine Coast Guard photo</div>BATANGAS (UPDATED) — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) arrested eight individuals aboard a fishing vessel suspected of being involved in oil pilferage or unauthorized transfer of petroleum products near Tingloy Island in Batangas on Saturday.According to the PCG, its personnel responded after the fishing vessel was found drifting near the shoreline of Barangay Makawayan in Tingloy due to engine trouble.During inspection, one of the crew members admitted that the vessel and its petroleum cargo had no proper documentation.This prompted the PCG to conduct a deeper investigation into the crew’s suspected unauthorized activity involving the illegal transfer of fuel at sea.The fishing vessel was found carrying approximately 5,000 liters of diesel. Of this amount, 4,000 liters were reportedly intended for delivery as cargo , while the remaining 1,000 liters were for the vessel’s own consumption.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/8/1/21-arrested-as-calabarzon-police-crack-down-on-oil-pilferage-1318">21 arrested as CALABARZON police crack down on oil pilferage</a></div>The PCG Legal Unit and Investigation and Detection Unit are conducting a case build-up to determine the source, ownership, intended destination or use, and legality of the petroleum products.Based on the investigation, the arrested individuals could face possible violations of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (Republic Act No. 10863), provisions of the National Internal Revenue Code on fuel marking, and Batas Pambansa Blg. 33, as amended by Presidential Decree 1865, which penalizes the illegal trading of petroleum products.The eight individuals remain in PCG custody pending inquest proceedings and the determination and filing of charges.<div> </div><div>3 ARRESTED IN BAUAN</div>Authorities arrested three individuals at a compound in Barangay San Pedro, Bauan, Batangas, over their alleged involvement in oil pilferage.The suspects were identified as aliases Jun, 20; Baldwin, 29; and Norben, 43.According to the Bauan Police Station, the operation stemmed from a report by a concerned citizen who complained about a strong petroleum odor coming from the compound.When authorities responded, they also detected a strong smell of petroleum products in the area.Police said the suspects claimed they were merely workers at the compound. However, they failed to present any documents or permits proving that they were authorized to handle or possess the petroleum products.Authorities seized three bulk containers containing approximately 800 liters of petroleum products, worth an estimated P 48,000, along with a truck.The suspects are facing  charges for violations of Presidential Decree No. 1865, or the Oil Pilferage Law, and Republic Act No. 9514, or the Fire Code of the Philippines.
