Office of the City Election Officer Cotabato Facebook page</div>MANILA — Less than a month before the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliamentary election, the number of checkpoints set up across the area has increased to around 24,000 from 18,000, the Commission on Elections said on Monday.While this comes <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/17/comelec-barmm-generally-peaceful-amid-ambush-on-chief-minister-s-convoy-1445">after the ambush of BARMM Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua</a>, Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco said the ramping up of checkpoints is not because of the incident. “Talaga lang malaki po ang geographical area ng BARMM,” the spokesman told reporters.(BARMM really just covers a large geographical area.)Laudiangco also said the number of uniformed personnel securing BARMM has also increased but did not say by how many.Based on latest data, Comelec has apprehended 15 individuals for violation of the gun ban. It has confiscated around 20 firearms.So far, Comelec has not monitored any threats to the BARMM poll. It is hoping the ambush of Macacua is an isolated incident.The poll body reiterated its main concern for the election is <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/8/10/heavy-rain-flooding-could-pose-challenge-to-barmm-polls-comelec-1247">potential flooding during the rainy season.</a>“May mga naka-ready tayo na mga alternate voting centers, mga schools na hindi binabaha,” he said.(We have alternative voting centers, schools with no history of flooding.)Laudiangco acknowledged the flooding may prompt the commission to reschedule the poll if voters cannot leave their houses to vote. The spokesman assured the public that polls will be held within 30 days in case of a suspension.Currently, the Comelec is deploying election paraphernalia to its provincial hubs. Laudiangco said they are targeting to complete the deployment by the first week of September.
