<p>MANILA — Fast-rising floodwaters inundated homes in several barangays in Rodriguez, Rizal on Saturday night, August 29, after a nearby creek overflowed, forcing hundreds of residents to flee into muddy streets.</p><div><br/></div><div style="text-align:center"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F988614870906527%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=273&amp;t=0" width="273" height="476" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><br/></div><p>The sudden surge was triggered by heavy rains that prompted a Red Rainfall Warning across Rizal province.</p><p>Ronnel Alvarez, a resident of Kasiglahan Village in Barangay San Jose who filmed the deluge, said the water rose rapidly around 7:30 p.m. due to the relentless rainfall.</p><p>Residents noted that the floodwaters carried heavy loads of mud, dirt, and debris. Alvarez explained that the water originated from a channel connecting upland areas to local waterways.</p><p>&quot;Doon siya galing sa may tulay... lumaki na lang &#x27;yung creek... kaya nag-overflow na,&quot; he said, noting how quickly the current reached their street.</p><p>(It came from near the bridge, the creek swelled and overflowed.)</p><div><br/></div><div style="text-align:center"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F4535139243398297%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=273&amp;t=0" width="273" height="476" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>The raging water submerged roads and stranded vehicles. One driver was forced to abandon his stalled van as the current strengthened along Double L in Barangay San Isidro.</p><p>&quot;Wala nang tao doon... iniwan na &#x27;yon kasi sa lakas ng [agos], hindi na mapaandar,&quot; Alvarez added.</p><p>(There&#x27;s nobody there, they left it because of the strong current. They couldn&#x27;t get it going.)</p><p>He described how quickly the surge developed along Phase 1-G, a primary thoroughfare leading toward the local market.</p><p>&quot;Saglit lang, mga 15 minutes... gano&#x27;n na kaagad kataas (It only took 15 minutes),&quot; Alvarez said, adding that floodwaters reached chest to waist depth in low-lying areas before gradually subsiding.</p><p>Alvarez attributed the thick sediment to runoff coming directly from the mountain watershed.</p><p>To assist affected residents, rescue teams from the Rodriguez Police Station, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) deployed to hard-hit areas, including Kasiglahan 1K2 Phase 2. Rescuers worked through the night to bring trapped families to safety. </p><p>Data from the Rodriguez MDRRMO confirmed that approximately 1,800 families across eight barangays were evacuated to temporary shelters on Saturday night. By 10 p.m., floodwaters began to recede, leaving behind thick layers of mud and waste.</p><p>By 6 a.m. Sunday, August 30, primary roads were clear and passable again.
