Lingad Memorial General Hospital (JBLMGH) in San Fernando, Pampanga due to leptospirosis.&nbsp;On Saturday, Health Secretary Edwin Mercado and local officials visited the Center for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at JBLMGH to check on patients undergoing treatment.<div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/9/3/doh-exec-sounds-alarm-over-significant-increase-of-leptospirosis-cases-1144">DOH exec sounds alarm over &#39;significant increase&#39; of leptospirosis cases&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;</div>Some patients were placed in isolation rooms for closer monitoring and to ensure they receive the necessary medical care.According to JBLMGH Medical Center Chief II Dr. Monserrat Chichioco, the hospital has a capacity of around 1,000 beds, with 10 percent allocated for leptospirosis patients.&nbsp;Hospital officials said they have sufficient rooms and medicine supplies, as well as hemodialysis machines that can be used by patients who develop serious complications.Meanwhile, Mercado said leptospirosis cases in the country are expected to rise following the flooding experienced in several areas in recent weeks.Mercado said symptoms of leptospirosis may appear five to 15 days after infection, although they can take as long as 30 days to develop.The health secretary also assured the public that hospitals have sufficient beds, medicines, and facilities to handle the expected increase in cases.&nbsp;<div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/9/4/doh-ideal-ratio-of-healthcare-workers-to-population-will-take-7-years-1816">DOH: Ideal ratio of healthcare workers to population will take 7 years&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;</div>In Pampanga, an inter-referral system is in place, allowing hospitals to transfer patients who no longer require intensive care to other facilities. This helps free up beds for patients with more serious conditions.Mercado said health authorities are also preparing for a possible increase in leptospirosis and dengue cases during the monsoon season.For leptospirosis prevention, the Department of Health is distributing doxycycline to barangays for prophylaxis among individuals who have been exposed to floodwaters for prolonged periods.&nbsp;Health authorities are also preparing for a possible rise in dengue cases due to stagnant water that may serve as breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes.Meanwhile, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office provided financial assistance to families with relatives currently undergoing treatment for leptospirosis.<div>&nbsp;&nbsp;</div>
