MANILA -- Technology provider Converge ICT Solutions is expanding SkyTV as it sees the full migration of Sky Cable subscribers to Converge’s fiber technology by next year.SkyTV is a smart TV solution with various features, such as entertainment channels. Converge CEO Dennis Anthony Uy said trends are now shifting from the traditional form of entertainment like TV to streaming mobile apps.There are plans to further bring SkyTV to more locations and add more content.“You can see HBO, CNN, they go directly to the app. Even sports, NBA, you can subscribe on the app. Netflix [is] also on the app,” Uy said.He added that using fiber technology will benefit both consumers as well as businesses since running old technology is costly.“[It’s not] economical running a traditional network in terms of operational expenses, power consumption. It’s unnecessary. We need to transfer to IP technology,” Uy said.He is expecting to see a full migration of subscribers by January 2026. There are about 300,000 Sky subscribers nationwide, and Converge has been beefing up by migrating old cable lines to fiber.Sky and Converge signed a Network Services Agreement in July 2024 so Sky can utilize Converge’s fiber infrastructure without having to spend huge capital to develop its own network.Converge, for its part, said it has a capacity for 9 million subscribers, but just over 3 million are in use so the entry of Sky is also good for Converge.
