Chairman and CEO Dr. Allen Lien said the company uses predictive AI to scan for possible cases of osteoporosis in patients, especially the elderly. Predictive AI can also be used to check for eye problems, and is even being used in cancer research.“We now have a program to develop a cancer immunotherapy to fight against solid cancers,” Lien said.Acer’s medical AI is already being used in 514 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Southeast Asia, France, Belize, Palau, and the Solomon Islands. The company hopes to further expand the use of its AI as more countries give regulatory approval to the technology.“So, really in healthcare, AI can actually do a lot, and currently 514 hospitals [and] facilities already use our AI,” Lien said.For osteoporosis, Acer’s AI software can check a patient’s chest X-ray, which is fairly common, and analyze if the patient may have low bone density. This analysis is a more affordable alternative to the conventional screening, he said.“Because before we had this, you [had to] go through this DEXA machine, and this is actually cumbersome, not accessible, sometimes very expensive,” Lien said.Diagnosing osteoporosis early on can lead to interventions that can prevent hip joint fractures, which can have serious complications later on.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1761529699845acer osteo.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div>“The most frequently broken parts when you have osteoporosis are your lumbar, wrist, and your hip. And once you receive a total hip replacement, the mortality rate within five years is similar to end-stage breast cancer,” Lien said.Making the analysis more affordable is Acer’s VeriCompact portable X-ray system, which can easily be deployed in areas without access to conventional X-ray machines. Lien said that aside from portability, Acer’s system consumes less power and emits less radiation because it uses carbon nanotubes.“This is where the X-ray is emitted, and so it consumes less energy, and makes the machine much lighter. And also the radiation exposure for the user is as small as the natural background radiation,” Lien said.This doesn’t mean, though, that the platform removes the need for medical expertise, as the X-ray results will still need to be read by a radiologist.“The interpretation still needs to be done by the doctor. It&#x27;s just that it actually makes the X-ray more available to people,” Lien said.Acer also uses AI in its VeriSee ophthalmology platform, which the company said is capable of performing rapid and accurate screening for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and possible glaucoma.  “VeriSee analyzes color retinal images and delivers results within seconds,” Acer said.But one area where AI is already making a significant impact is clinical documentation. The company touted its aiMed, a generative AI platform that transforms real-time voice or text input into structured medical recordsAcer said that healthcare providers can spend up to 25 percent of their working hours on medical record keeping, which eats into the time that could have been devoted to patient care. Record keeping can also contribute significantly to burnout for healthcare workers.“Leveraging advanced real-time AI processing tailored specifically for healthcare purposes, aiMed converts voice dictation or typed notes into structured electronic medical records (EMRs). This ensures accuracy, completeness, and compliance with healthcare documentation standards, while streamlining the clinical workflow,” the company said.By automating record keeping, aiMed reduces the administrative workload for healthcare professionals, minimizes documentation errors in medical records, and maintains interoperability with hospital information systems (HIS / EMR platforms).By minimizing this administrative task, aiMed also helps enhance patient safety and quality of care by allowing more time for physician-patient interactions.
