MANILA -- A journalism think tank at the London School of Economics (LSE) is working with Google News Initiative to encourage journalists to think of ways artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in the newsroom.Through the Journalism AI Innovation Challenge, newsrooms are encouraged to find ways by which AI can directly support the work of journalists.News organizations can work on an existing proof-of-concept or submit a new idea that they can develop into a prototype. A newsroom can seek a grant of either $50,000 or $100,000.At the end of the program, grantees must show their tool or working prototype to the Journalism AI community. They must also share their best practices of using AI in the newsroom.The program will run for 9 months, starting in February 2026. Applications will run from November 11 to December 3, and winners will be announced at the end of January 2026.Google said that up to 12 small and medium-sized news organizations could be selected for the program.Matt Cooke, head of ecosystem investment programs at Google News partnerships, said he hoped the project would promote experimentation and encourage the adoption of best practices in more newsrooms worldwide.
