Jekki Pascual, ABS-CBN News </div>MANILA -- Pilipinas AI, the country’s &quot;first&quot; sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) solutions stack, was launched on Monday at the VITRO Sta. Rosa data center in Laguna.PLDT’S ICT arm, ePLDT, unveiled Pilipinas AI together with partners Dell Technologies and Katonic AI. The company said AI is growing and the country needs its own sovereign AI. Sovereign AI is artificial intelligence developed by a country for use within that country to ensure that it aligns with local laws, cultural values, and interests. It is unlike other AI models like OpenAI&#x27;s ChatGPT or Google&#x27;s Gemini, which are used globally and trained using data from different countries.ePLDT and VITRO President and CEO Victor Genuino said that the Philippines having its own AI system will encourage local and even foreign companies to expand to AI programs or solutions in the country. He said small and large companies can use their AI services with the help of its AI-ready hyperscale data center without the burden of managing or building their own infrastructure.“Enterprises can start building and deploying AI models right away without worrying about setup, integration or compliance,” Genuino said.“With data staying in the country, our customers benefit from low latency performance, enhanced security and compliance with our data privacy laws,” he added.Aside from the private sector, Genuino sees the public sector as a big beneficiary of this sovereign AI system. He said the government is the biggest data owner in the country, and all data can be and should be stored within the country and not in a public cloud.“To be able to capture a lot of the sensitive public sector or private sector data. We’re talking about eGov, PhilHealth, SSS, GSIS data, LTO, DFA, NBI clearances,” he said.He said he hopes the government will issue clear guidelines on data classification and data localization policies. He said a law or policy will help the industry to classify what is sensitive data or highly sensitive data, and where one should store or keep such data.“The last thing that’s needed talaga is regulation that will very explicitly specify that sovereign sensitive data has to be domiciled within Philippine shores,” he said.Company officials said that the sovereign AI system can speed up AI adoption in the country, as there are many use cases in the Philippines, like in agriculture, transport, healthcare, and even infrastructure projects. They said with AI, people can see the status of various infrastructure projects and if maintenance or repair is needed.“The Philippines is now ready to compete with world-class foreign investments. If the Amazons, Microsofts, Googles, Oracles in the world want to invest in the Philippines, we’re ready,’ Genuino asserted.
