<p>MANILA -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology urges the public to immediately report social media posts that may be classified as fake news, misinformation or disinformation.</p><p>DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said they now have close contact with social media platforms, particularly Meta, the parent firm of Facebook. Aguda said Meta has written him to support the Philippine government’s campaign against fake news and a post may be taken down after due process.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/technology/2026/4/13/dict-says-preserving-evidence-on-deepfakes-misinformation-1603" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DICT says preserving evidence on deepfakes, misinformation</a></div><p>He said Filipinos can email a screenshot of a fake news post and send to 1326@dict.gov.ph and DICT will send it to Meta or other platforms for verification.</p><p>“Diretso siya kay Meta. Si Meta, within 24 hours, dedesisyunan niya kung talagang fake or hindi. But before niya itakedown, meron siyang tinatawag na demotion process,” he said.</p><p>Aguda added that Meta has already taken down posts automatically that it deemed fake news, even without DICT reporting, but it will also help if the public steps in to file a report against other posts that were not taken down.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/4/10/pco-to-launch-website-against-fake-news-2013" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PCO to launch website against fake news</a></div><p>“May quarantine period na 24 hours, demoted. Siyempre makikita mo ’yan sa eco chamber mo pero ’di na lalabas. Pagka biglang ‘ah fake news talaga ito’, tatanggalin nila,” he said.</p><p>Aguda said there is a need to fight fake news, misinformation, and disinformation without compromising freedom of expression.</p><p>“Yung freedom of expression, yung political talk, yung ability to give your opinion, dapat yun protected. Ang ayaw natin, halimbawa, ‘o dito LPG nag-increase ng 300 times’, magpa-panic buying yung mga tao. Yun pala hindi naman. ’Yun ayaw natin ng mga gano’n,” he added.</p><p>The DICT secretary also urges Filipinos to be more critical of posts or news, especially from unknown sources. He admitted that some people may hide under the pretense that the post is using ‘allegedly’ or other terms that may not directly say a post is a fact.</p><p>“Yung iba, nagtatago sa ‘I heard this, baka ganito, ganyan.’ Alam natin na nag-iintriga or blind item. Sa publiko, suriin niyo na lang,” he said.</p><p>Aguda said DICT is ready to accept complaints and reports from the public. It uses artificial intelligence to help in the receiving of reports, and staff can also handle various reports. One can email and may also call the Hotline 1326 for other concerns, like scams.
