Handout</div>TAIPEI — Apple’s MacBook Neo is about to get some competition as Qualcomm announced a new low-cost chip designed for affordable laptops, promising decent performance for basic tasks while still maintaining great battery life. Acer was among the first PC vendors to announce a laptop based on the Snapdragon C as it unveiled the Aspire Go 15 ahead of Computex, which is one of the world’s biggest tech expos.Qualcomm said its new Snapdragon C is a new entry‑tier processor designed to deliver responsive performance, cool, quiet designs and “all-day battery life” in entry-tier laptops targeting $300 and up.The company has been making ARM-based chips for Windows laptops since 2024, but these were for costlier and more powerful devices. Snapdragon C would be its first chip targeted towards the “entry-level” notebooks segment, which was disrupted by Apple earlier this year, with the launch of the very successful <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/technology/2026/4/22/preview-why-the-macbook-neo-is-a-stunner-and-may-be-a-game-changer-1252" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MacBook Neo</a>. While both Intel and AMD already make chips for entry-level laptops, these tend to have a shorter battery life as well as slower performance when compared to the MacBook Neo. Laptops built on these chips also tend to heat up. Handout</div><div>ACER FIRES FIRST SHOT</div>Acer, which has long competed in the budget laptop segment, meanwhile has announced the Snapdragon C-powered Aspire Go 15, which it says “delivers the best of the essentials at an affordable price point for users to stay connected, productive, and ready for what the day brings.” The Taiwanese tech giant said the Aspire Go 15 will deliver smooth and responsive performance for essential tasks like working, web browsing, and streaming, paired with a cool, quiet design. Like the MacBook Neo, it will also have 8 GB of memory. But the new budget laptop will also come with 512 GB storage, a huge 15.6-inch display, dual full-function USB Type-C ports and an HDMI port enable seamless device connection and charging, while Wi-Fi 6E delivers fast, reliable online experiences. Acer, however, is also hedging its bet by announcing another MacBook Neo competitor, with an Intel-powered chip called the Swift Air 14.
