(Photo by Josh Edelson / AFP) </div>MANILA—Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off with a massive wave of software updates and a heavy, system-wide injection of AI, or what the company calls &quot;Apple Intelligence.&quot; But this year&#x27;s keynote wasn&#x27;t just about software; it also marked the end of an era. The presentation, which was streamed globally on YouTube, was Apple CEO Tim Cook&#x27;s final appearance at WWDC. Cook, who has led the company since Steve Jobs’ death in 2011, will cede the reins to longtime executive John Ternus in September. Clearly moved, Cook appeared to wipe away a tear while addressing the audience of developers and executives, calling his tenure &quot;the honor of a lifetime.&quot;<div>Siri gets a Google-powered brain transplant</div>To power its new era, Apple turned to a rival. Instead of building models entirely in-house, Apple hired Google to provide the backbone for its new capabilities, leveraging a version of Google&#x27;s Gemini model. The move deepens an already lucrative relationship; Google already pays Apple tens of billions annually to remain Safari&#x27;s default search engine.Apple pulled the curtain back on this new generation of Apple Intelligence, spearheaded by a reimagined virtual assistant now called Siri AI. Arriving with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, the update represents the most aggressive overhaul of Siri since its inception, moving it closer to the omnipresent, context-aware assistant Apple has been promising for years.Two years ago, Cook announced a major leap into AI, but that promised rollout never fully occurred. A much-anticipated Siri upgrade failed to materialize as rivals such as Samsung and Microsoft delivered better AI experiences.But Apple’s more deliberate pace has actually won praise from some analysts, who credit the company for avoiding the hundreds of billions in infrastructure spending committed by tech rivals. &quot;Some appear to be racing forward, seemingly pursuing AI for the sake of AI, without clear regard for the people it&#x27;s meant to serve,&quot; Apple software chief Craig Federighi noted in a launch video.&quot;Overall, this was an impressive event that did not disappoint as Cook and Apple finally unveiled an AI strategy that will unleash the true monetization opportunity,&quot; said Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities.<div>Personal context and daily limits</div>Siri AI can now dig through messages, emails, and photos to find hyper-specific information—like pulling up an old hotel confirmation code. It also gains on-screen awareness, allowing it to look at what’s on your display or use the camera via a new &quot;Siri mode&quot; to analyze real-world objects. A dedicated Siri app will let you view your entire chat history, syncing privately via iCloud.However, there are catches. Some features, like image generation, will have daily usage limits because they rely heavily on powerful server models. Furthermore, Siri AI will not be available initially in Europe or China due to ongoing regulatory issues.<div>New parental controls</div>Apple also showcased a comprehensive revamp of its parental controls as tech companies face mounting global pressure over child safety.When parents set up a &quot;Child Account,&quot; the system automatically applies age-appropriate guardrails. A new Ask to Browse feature blocks kids from visiting new websites in Safari until a parent approves the request. Apple is also expanding its Communication Safety features; it will now actively detect and block graphic gore and violent content in shared media, expanding on existing nudity filters.To combat screen addiction, Apple worked with child development experts to build Time Allowances, letting parents set daily usage limits specifically targeting Entertainment, Games, and Social Media.Outside of AI, Apple claims the new software will make everyday tasks feel significantly snappier, boasting 30 percent faster app launches and 80 percent faster AirDrop transfers. There’s also a new visual customization slider called Liquid Glass, which lets users adjust the UI aesthetic from ultra-clear to fully tinted.The developer betas drop today, with a public beta arriving later this summer.Despite its rocky AI history, Apple shares have largely defied gravity, gaining about 15 percent this year, while iPhone sales grew by double digits in nearly every market in Q1.<div>- with a report from Agence France-Presse</div>
