Acer’s new Vero 16 laptop pushes repairability with upgradable motherboard, CPU

Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>BERLIN — In a world where upgrading a gadget means buying a new one and getting rid of the old, Acer says it is taking a different approach by allowing users to upgrade the notebook’s critical components. </p><p>Ahead of the formal opening of the IFA tech expo, Acer unveiled the new Vero 16 on Wednesday, which pushes the company&#x27;s sustainable PC line a step further. </p><p>According to the Taiwanese tech giant, the Vero combines modular repairability with modern specs like Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 processors and an optional 3K OLED display.</p><p>You can DIY upgrade important components, according to James Lin, Acer’s General Manager for the Notebook Product Business. The chassis features a tool-free bottom access latch, user-replaceable battery and SSD storage, removable side I/O port covers, and even a detachable hinge mechanism. </p><p>Acer has even engraved visual repair guides directly onto the bottom of the machine. </p><p>But what really sets it apart is this: if, after a few years of use, you feel like you need a faster processor, you can take your Vero laptop to an Acer service center and have the motherboard and CPU upgraded. Operating as a full Windows 11 Copilot+ PC, it scales up to an Intel Core Ultra X9 388H processor (delivering up to 180 platform TOPS for local AI features like Live Captions and Cocreator). </p><p>The flagship configuration features a 16-inch 3K OLED WQXGA+ panel running at 120Hz. Connectivity is equally robust, offering two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.1, dual USB-A slots, a full-sized SD card reader, and Wi-Fi 7 support.</p><p>Acer says it is expanding its design strategy to encompass a &quot;4R&quot; approach—adding &quot;repairability&quot; alongside reduce, reuse, and recycle. The shell itself mixes 50 percent post-industrial low-carbon aluminum with recycled plastic and a solvent-free powder-coated finish over its MIL-STD-810H chassis.</p><div><strong>RIGHT TO REPAIR</strong></div><p>Acer’s aggressive design overhaul isn&#x27;t happening in a vacuum. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>This means extended spare part availability—manufacturers are required to supply spare parts and technical repair manuals for 5 to 10 years after a product is discontinued.</p><p>The EU also bans anti-repair practices by outlawing hardware or software locks that prevent independent repair shops or end-users from servicing devices.</p><p>By integrating tool-free access and multi-generational upgrade support into a mainstream consumer chassis, Acer is positioning itself ahead of regulatory mandates—setting a precedent that could force rival PC makers to make DIY serviceability the baseline standard.</p><p>If Acer actually delivers on its multi-generational processor upgrade promises, it could offer mainstream buyers a compelling alternative to niche repairable brands like Framework.</p><p>The Acer Vero 16 is slated to launch in the Europe-Middle East-Africa region in the first quarter of 2027, though regional pricing has not yet been detailed. </p>
