Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — Between two to eight tropical cyclones may form within or enter the Philippine area of responsibility during the first half of 2026, according to PAGASA.</p><p>The weather bureau forecasts zero or one storm each month from January to April and one or two cyclones each in May and June.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong><u></u><u>A new set of tropical cyclone names will be used for the 2026 season:</u></strong></div><div><br/></div><p>• Ada</p><p>• Basyang</p><p>• Caloy</p><p>• Domeng</p><p>• Ester</p><p>• Francisco</p><p>• Gardo</p><p>• Henry</p><p>• Inday</p><p>• Josie</p><p>• Kiyapo</p><p>• Luis</p><p>• Maymay</p><p>• Neneng</p><p>• Obet</p><p>• Pilandok</p><p>• Queenie</p><p>• Rosal</p><p>• Samuel</p><p>• Tomas</p><p>• Umberto</p><p>• Venus</p><p>• Waldo</p><p>• Yayang</p><p>• Zeny</p><div><br/></div><p>Ada, Francisco, Kiyapo, and Pilandok are the replacement names, respectively, for Agaton, Florita, Karding, and Paeng, which were removed from the rotating list after causing too much devastation in 2022.</p><p>Storm names are retired when there are at least 300 fatalities or one billion pesos damage in agriculture and infrastructure.</p><p>Ada is the Cebuano word for fairy, Francisco is a common Filipino name, Kiyapo is a genus of an aquatic plant, and Pilandok is the Philippine mouse deer.</p><p>The country had 23 tropical cyclones in 2025, with cumulative deaths of almost 350 and damage totaling more than P32 billion, based on National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council data.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>CLIMATE OUTLOOK</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>According to PAGASA, the prevailing weak La Niña will remain short-lived and may persist only through the first quarter of 2026.</p><p>The equatorial Pacific Ocean is thereafter seen to transition to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) neutral conditions - the absence of La Niña and El Niño.</p><p>In terms of rainfall, near to above-normal rainfall conditions are expected over many parts of the country in January, except the western sections of Northern and Central Luzon where below-normal rains are likely.</p><p>From February to April, near to above-normal precipitation is likely over Visayas and Mindanao while most of Luzon may have below to way below normal rains.</p><p>The country will see near to above normal rainfall conditions in May and June.</p><p>Meanwhile, colder weather is expected across many parts of the country as the northeast monsoon or Amihan season enters its peak.</p><p>Temperatures over the mountainous regions of Luzon may dip to 7.5°C in January and 9.2°C in February. In Metro Manila, minimum temperatures of 17.4°C and 18.5°C, respectively, may be expected in the first two months of the year.</p><p>As the country transitions into the warm and dry season, the mercury may hit 40°C in April, May, and June in Northern Luzon.</p><p>April will be the hottest month in lowlands Luzon and Metro Manila, with peak temperatures potentially reaching 40.5°C and 39.1°C, respectively.</p><p>In 2025, the lowest temperature recorded was 9.4°C in La Trinidad, Benguet on January 25 while the hottest was observed in Camiling, Tarlac at 39.9°C on April 21.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/y19WEesgy2k?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong><br/></div>
