Handout/PAGASA</div>MANILA -- Wind signal no. 1 is now up in 12 provinces due to tropical depression Basyang.The following areas may experience strong winds in the coming hours:<ul><li>southern Eastern Samar</li><li>southern Samar</li><li>central and southern Leyte</li><li>Southern Leyte</li><li>Dinagat Islands</li><li>Surigao del Norte</li><li>Surigao del Sur</li><li>Agusan del Norte</li><li>Agusan del Sur</li><li>Camiguin</li><li>eastern Misamis Oriental</li><li>northern Davao Oriental</li></ul><div> </div>More areas will be placed under wind signals as Basyang moves closer to land.At 4 p.m., the tropical depression was located 655 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It packs winds of 55 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 70 kph and is moving westward at 15 kph.Basyang is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm today.It may make its first landfall over Caraga between late Thursday and early Friday.It may weaken into a tropical depression after crossing northeastern Mindanao.The storm will traverse Central and Western Visayas before emerging over the Sulu Sea on Saturday morning.It will pass northern Palawan Saturday afternoon or evening and will be over the West Philippine Sea by early Sunday, where it may weaken further into a low pressure area.Basyang will bring significant rainfall over Mindanao, Visayas, and Southern Luzon through the weekend.Heavy to intense rains are expected in Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Siquijor, Aklan, and Antique.Widespread and serious flooding and landslides are likely in many areas.The public is advised to continue monitoring updates on the disturbance and take necessary measures to protect life and property.
