Lawmaker wants apprehension of traffic violators suspended amid high fuel costs

<p>MANILA - Swerte Party List Rep. Arlyn Ayon has asked the Land Transportation Office whether it can suspend the apprehension of traffic violators amid high fuel costs triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.  </p><p>“Pwede ba nating no apprehension muna for 2 weeks or 3 weeks for the meantime, habang naghihirap ‘yung ating mga tao… Wala munang huli lalu na sa mga single motor, kasi ‘yun ang mga ginagamit ng parents sa paghatid sa mga bata sa school,” Ayon said. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/3/12/doe-expects-fresh-round-of-fuel-price-hike-next-week-1425"><strong>DOE expects fresh round of fuel price hike next week </strong></a></div><p> “Road safety po ito eh. ‘Yung mga inaapprehend po namin ‘yung mga may violation. So kung magko-comply ‘yung mga kababayan natin at hindi sila gagawa ng traffic violations, wala po silang problema sa amin sa LTO,” LTO Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao replied. </p><p>House Committee on Ways and Means Chairperson Rep. Miro Quimbo thumbed down Ayon’s suggestion, saying its effect, if implemented, will be “diabolical”. </p><p>&quot;I don&#x27;t think extraordinary economic circumstances like what we&#x27;re facing today merits tolerance ng paglabag ng ating mga batas. Hindi porkit nasa giyera… o kung ano man ay isasantabi natin ano ‘yung ating mga kalakaran o patakaran na in fact is put in place to create order,&quot; Quimbo said. </p><p>&quot;Kasi if you allow people to go freely even if they violate, who is to say what kind of violation? Edi lahat na lang magva-violate, kasi since hindi naman nanguhuli. So I think it&#x27;s ill-advised if that request is followed because true, the intention is good but the effect is going to be diabolical.
