<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1782013380134philippines_band_13_20260621004000.gif" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">RAMB/US NOAA/Himawari</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The southwest monsoon or Habagat, enhanced by severe tropical storm Francisco, will bring rainy weather across many parts of the country next week, according to PAGASA.</p><p>This Sunday, the storm’s trough or extension will bring scattered rains over Bicol and Eastern Visayas while the resurgent Habagat is now affecting Palawan, Mindanao, and the rest of Visayas.</p><p>As of 10 a.m., Francisco was located 1,170 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon. It was moving north northwestward at 25 kph.</p><p>With maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour and gustiness up to 135 kph, Francisco is seen to intensify into a typhoon today. PAGASA said it could reach the peak intensity of 165 kph winds between Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 23.</p><p>The storm is not expected to make landfall over any part of the country but will recurve or make a turn close to the Batanes-Babuyan area between Tuesday, and Thursday, June 25.</p><p>This could warrant the hoisting of wind signals over parts of Northern Luzon as early as Monday.</p><p>As the cyclone moves northwards, it may pull the Habagat over Luzon by midweek, with scattered monsoon rains likely to persist through the weekend.</p><p>In Metro Manila, periods of scattered rains may begin on Wednesday.</p><p>The weather bureau warned of possible flooding and landslides in hazard-prone areas, especially during periods of prolonged and heavy rainfall.</p><p>A study of meteorologists from Ateneo de Manila University and PAGASA found that about a third of precipitation during the Habagat season is brought by typhoon-enhanced monsoon.</p><p>Tropical cyclones are considered most effective in enhancing the southwest monsoon when they are positioned between northern Luzon and the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan.</p><p>A recent example happened in July 2024, when Super Typhoon Carina, which lingered east of Taiwan, significantly enhanced the Habagat and brought several days of heavy monsoon over Luzon, triggering widespread and serious flooding in Metro Manila and Central Luzon. </p><p>More than 40 people died, while over P10 billion damage to agriculture and infrastructure was reported.</p><p>Francisco may exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/6/12/weather-pattern-el-nino-is-here-and-could-reach-historic-intensity-1013">Weather pattern El Nino is here and could reach historic intensity</a></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wLcrc60s3BI?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
