At nakikita nating itong tropical storm na ito ay mas lalakas pa sa susunod na mga araw at posibleng pumasok ng ating area of responsibility sa kalagitnaan ng susunod na linggo,” state weather forecaster Leanne Loreto said during PAGASA’s early morning broadcast on Thursday.</p><p>(We are already tracking a tropical storm outside our monitoring domain. This storm may intensify further in the coming days and may enter the Philippine area of responsibility [PAR] in the middle of next week.)</p><p>The tropical storm, with international name Bavi, was located more than 3,700 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas at 9:30 a.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.</p><p>The weather disturbance is expected to continue intensifying as it moves across the Pacific Ocean.</p><p>Based on JMA’s forecast track, it may pass through the Northern Mariana Islands as a very strong typhoon by Monday.</p><p>Bavi may enter the PAR as a super typhoon Wednesday of next week. It will be assigned the local name Inday.</p><p>Current projections indicate a no-landfall scenario.</p><p>“Base po sa ating model guidance ay nakikita natin ay ito po’y lilihis lamang po ng ating north Philippine Sea, although mataas pa po yung uncertainty… sa magiging scenario nitong bagong bagyo,” Loreto said.</p><p>(Based on current model guidance, the storm may only cross the northern portion of the Philippine Sea, although the uncertainty in this scenario remains high.)</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>However, the potential super typhoon could indirectly bring significant rainfall later in the week.</p><p>“Ang ating nakikita po magkakaroon po ng paghila itong bagong bagyo sa ating Habagat kaya’t asahan po natin kalagitnaan ng susunod na linggo hanggang over the weekend ay magkakaroon tayo ng mga pag-ulan sa kanlurang bahagi ng ating bansa,” she added.</p><p>(The tropical cyclone will enhance the Habagat, so we expect rainy conditions over the western section of the country from the middle of next week through the weekend.)</p><p>A study by Filipino meteorologists published in 2025 found that about one-third of the country’s rainy season rainfall is associated with tropical cyclone-enhanced Habagat.</p><p>Tropical cyclones produce the maximum Habagat enhancement when they are positioned between Northern Luzon and the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan, according to a 2019 study by meteorology professor Gerry Bagtasa.</p><p>In 2024, Habagat enhanced by Super Typhoon Carina brought intense rainfall for three consecutive days, triggering massive flooding in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and CALABARZON.
