Disaster response teams, health personnel, and local government units (LGUs) have established temporary shelters and evacuation centers for families displaced by the widespread flooding. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News </em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The recent class suspensions from the string of typhoons and monsoon rains have affected over six million students and eight thousand schools all over the country, according to the Department of Education.</p><p>Speaking to reporters during his visit to Santolan Elementary School on Wednesday, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said despite this, measures are in place to ensure that learning will not be impeded even if students lose days in the classroom.</p><p>“Dito sa bagong three-term school year natin, meron talagang mga panahon para to make up for the lost days,” he said.</p><p>Learning in Santolan Elementary School was interrupted for three days, from August 9 to 11, after it served as an evacuation center for over 700 families whose homes were inundated from the nonstop rainfall.</p><p>In an informal meeting with the education chief, its principal Editha Tolop called on officials for additional evacuation centers in their area so that schools will not have to serve as temporary shelters of families affected by floods.</p><p>“Kasi &#x27;di ba, last resort po dapat ang school. Kaya lang nagkakaroon po ng pagkakataon na syempre gusto nating matulungan ang mga kababayan natin,” she said.</p><p>“So, in fact, the purpose is to not put pressure on the schools actually. Because pag may evacuation centers, hindi schools yung tatakbuhan. So, papatulong kami sa kanila dito sa construction ng evacuation centers,” Angara answered.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/9/2-424-classrooms-damaged-by-habagat-rains-says-deped-1745">2,424 classrooms damaged by habagat rains, says DepEd</a></div><p>While he did not directly say just how many of the 8,000 schools sustained major damage, Angara said some affected schools in Baguio will not be available for use immediately.</p><p>“Dati kasi parang stop schooling tapos resumption, walang in-between. So nag-develop tayo ng mga modality na pwedeng nasa bahay lang pero may ongoing learning programs. Wala nang problema sa suspension, more or less it&#x27;s clear already eh. But we&#x27;re trying to introduce some more localized para tulad ng ginagawa sa Pasig, hindi lang si mayor nagsususpend. Tinatanong niya yung mga eskwelahan kung kailangan ba magsuspend dun sa area nila.
