Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News "/><span class="fr-inner" spellcheck="false" style="text-align:left">Pedestrians watch their steps along the flooded streets of Pedro Gil, Manila, on Monday, August 17, 2026. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</em> </span></span></span>MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said that 201.7 millimeters (mm) of rain fell in Metro Manila within five hours on Monday, Aug. 17.</div><p>The rain volume was recorded from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Science Garden in DOST-PAGASA Compound, Quezon City, MMDA Chairman Romando “Don” Artes said on TV Patrol Express. 138.7 mm fell from 12 noon to 2 p.m. </p><p>For comparison, Artes said 455 mm were dumped within 24 hours during the 2009 onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy, which caused widespread flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.</p><p>“Napakalaki pong bahagi ng Metro Manila na nabaha. Iyan po ay dahil sa sobra pong volume,” he said. </p><p>The MMDA chairman reported that the Estero de Sunog Apog pumping station in Manila and the San Juan River overflowed, causing G. Araneta and E. Rodriguez Avenue not passable for vehicles due to flooding. </p><p>He also said the soils have been saturated due to the past heavy rains, making flooding immediately emerge in several roads and communities in Metro Manila.</p><p>Artes however noted that the water quickly subsides due to the pumping stations he said were functioning well. </p><p>“Mga 30 minutes to one hour after ng sobrang lakas na ulan, nawawala naman at nagiging passable yung areas. May mga naiiwan na lang na ilan na sobra ang inilalim ng tubig,” he said.</p><p>The MMDA assured that it is providing assistance to motorists and residents in need.
