<p>MANILA — Saudel neared super typhoon strength as it entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday, according to PAGASA.</p><p>The typhoon was given the local name Obet. </p><p>At 4 p.m., it was spotted 1,430 km east of Luzon&#x27;s northern tip, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour and up to 205 kph gusts.   </p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:511px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17875436717641787543669482.jpeg" style="width:960px;display:block" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Track and intensity forecast of typhoon Saudel. <em>PAGASA</em></span></span></span></div><p>Moving west northwestward at 30 kph, Obet is expected to stay only briefly inside PAR.  </p><p>The typhoon will remain far from the Philippine landmass and follow a wide reversed-U track toward mainland China.</p><p>But Obet will enhance the southwest monsoon or Habagat going to the weekend, bringing increased rainfall over the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila. Flooding and landslides are expected in affected areas.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/8/23/enhanced-habagat-will-drench-luzon-towards-the-weekend-2204">Enhanced habagat will drench Luzon towards the weekend </a></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPAGASA.DOST.GOV.PH%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0QgNqqhj1Ndy5JpGAcRAjpjhZdTWqWU44NpE7CW7LXGbVXokNGZdJt9eYHK5kerH1l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="520" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><p>Meanwhile, the tropical depression east of southern Luzon intensified into a tropical storm Monday morning and was assigned the international name Atsani, which means thunderbolt in Thai.</p><p>At 8 a.m., it was located 1,325 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon, packing maximum winds of 65 kph with gusts up to 80 kph and moving northeastward at 25 kph.</p><p>Atsani has been gradually moving away from the country since Sunday afternoon and is no longer expected to enter the PAR.</p><p>It will follow an arc-like track near the PAR eastern boundary as it interacts with the much stronger typhoon Saudel before eventually merging with its broader circulation.</p><p>On the other hand, tropical depression Gaenari is over the Taiwan Strait and is about to make landfall over mainland China.</p><p>At 8 a.m., it was located 505 kilometers north northwest of Batanes.
