<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178773591958420260817-habagat-flooding-espana-manila-DJ6.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Pedestrians wade through gutter- to knee-deep floodwaters along España Boulevard in Manila following heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or Habagat, August 17, 2026. via Daniel Jacob, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Five to seven more tropical cyclones are expected to form within or enter the Philippine area of responsibility in the remaining months of 2026, PAGASA said Wednesday.</p><p>Here is the monthly breakdown of the remaining expected storms this year. </p><ul><li>2 or 3    September</li><li>1 or 2    October</li><li>1 or 2    November</li><li>1 or 2    December</li></ul><div><br/></div><p>One more storm is also possible in January, while there is only a slim chance of a tropical cyclone in February, PAGASA said in a climate forum. </p><p>The remaining storm names in PAGASA’s 2026 list include Pilandok, Queenie, Rosal, Samuel, Tomas, Umberto, Venus, Yayang, and Zeny.</p><p>Tropical cyclones tend to make landfall and cross the country during the last quarter of the year. This is due to the formation of a strong high pressure area over the Northern Pacific that blocks the storms from moving northwestward during the winter season.</p><p>However, the prevailing <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/8/21/what-a-record-breaking-el-nino-could-mean-for-the-world-0917">El Niño</a> could alter the usual tropical cyclone behavior.</p><p>The migration of the warm ocean waters to the central and eastern portion of the Pacific Ocean may cause some storms to recurve before entering the PAR. Those that may reach the country could become more intense and more devastating after traveling over warm waters for a longer distance.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/8/21/what-a-record-breaking-el-nino-could-mean-for-the-world-0917">What a record-breaking El Nino could mean for the world </a></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>RAINFALL REDUCTION LOOMS</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>After several weeks of enhanced southwest monsoon or Habagat, Metro Manila and 21 provinces in the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and parts of Cordillera and Mimaropa received above-normal rainfall in August.</p><p>In contrast, 40 provinces in southern Bicol, most of Visayas, and Mindanao not affected by Habagat had way-below or more than 60-percent reduction in rainfall in the same period.</p><p>PAGASA forecasts below-normal precipitation over most of northern Luzon in September, while near-normal rains could be experienced over the rest of the country.</p><p>By October, Luzon, Visayas, and Caraga may see below-normal rainfall or 20 to 40 percent reduction from average. Near normal rainfall is still expected over the rest of Mindanao.</p><p>In November, most of the country could have below normal rainfall. Provinces in the western portion may see rainfall deficits of more than 60 percent.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/8/21/el-nino-to-be-biggest-for-over-a-century-uk-met-office-1615">El Nino to be &#x27;biggest for over a century&#x27;: UK Met Office </a></div><p>However, near to above normal rains may be possible in Luzon and Western Visayas due to potential passing tropical cyclones.
