<p>Families of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas held an event in Washington D.C. on Sunday (January 19) to thank incoming U.S. President Donald Trump for his efforts to secure a ceasefire but urged him to follow through so that all remaining hostages are set free.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2025/1/19/gaza-ceasefire-takes-effect-after-delay-0027">Gaza ceasefire takes effect after delay</a></div><p>Three Israeli women were set free on Sunday after a ceasefire deal halted fighting in Gaza, on the eve of the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2025/1/19/first-israeli-hostages-freed-as-gaza-truce-begins-0145">First Israeli hostages freed as Gaza truce begins</a></div><p>Families of hostages and their supporters gathered on the National Mall in front of the Washington Monument to call on Trump to make sure the multi-stage ceasefire deal is implemented in full.</p><p>The first phase of the truce in the 15-month-old war between Israel and Hamas took effect following a three-hour delay during which Israeli warplanes and artillery pounded the Gaza Strip.</p><p>The truce calls for fighting to stop, aid to be sent in to Gaza and 33 of nearly 100 Israeli and foreign hostages to go free over the six-week first phase in return for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.</p><p>The war between Israel and Hamas began after the militants stormed Israeli towns and villages on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and capturing more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.</p><p>More than 47,000 Palestinians have since been killed in Israeli attacks, according to medical officials in the enclave. Nearly the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza is homeless. Around 400 Israeli soldiers have also died.</p>
