<p>Members of a Catholic splinter sect that was excommunicated earlier this week gathered for mass on Sunday at their seminary in the southwest Swiss hamlet of Econe.</p><p>The Vatican said on Thursday (July 2) that priests and lay Catholics who are part of the Society of St. Pius X that ordained bishops without Pope Leo&#x27;s approval were in schism with the wider Church and now excommunicated.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/7/1/breakaway-catholic-sect-defies-vatican-again-by-ordaining-bishops-1606">READ: Breakaway Catholic sect defies Vatican again by ordaining bishops</a></div><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/7/2/vatican-excommunicates-6-ultraconservative-bishops-over-ordination-1545">READ: Vatican excommunicates 6 ultraconservative bishops over ordination</a></div><p>In a strong decree, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the top watchdog authority for the 1.4-billion-member Church, also warned Catholics globally that the breakaway right-wing Catholic group now celebrated the sacraments illicitly.</p><p>The ultra-traditionalist group, which denies key Church teachings, cannot officiate marriages or hear confessions validly, the decree said.</p><p>The group split over sweeping reforms enacted by the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council including the abandonment of the old-style Latin Mass and moves towards dialogue with non-Catholics.</p><div><strong>(Camera &amp; Editing Boris Heger Production: Lewis Macdonald)</strong></div>
