<p>VIENNA, Austria — It was a race against the sunset for hundreds of people who gathered along the Danube on Wednesday evening, hoping to catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse before the setting sun disappeared behind Kahlenberg.</p><p>The eclipse began in Vienna at around 7:21 p.m., giving spectators only a short window to watch the moon slowly move across the face of the sun. </p><p>Maximum eclipse came shortly after 8 p.m., but sunset followed just minutes later, at around 8:14 p.m.</p><p>The anticipation had been building throughout the day. Across Vienna, optical shops selling eclipse glasses saw long lines as residents rushed to find proper eye protection before the event. Stores had customers waiting outside, while others quickly ran through their supplies as people made last-minute preparations for the evening.</p><p>For many, simply getting to the river became part of the experience.</p><p>People came straight from work, with some arriving just in time. Bicycles lined the paths as commuters pedaled toward the Danube, determined not to miss the celestial event. People shared food, listened to music and chatted while waiting for the eclipse to reach its most dramatic point. With the sun already hanging low on the horizon, spectators knew they had only minutes left. Across the river, toward Klosterneuburg, the landscape provided a dramatic frame for the disappearing light.</p><p>The eclipse was particularly striking because Vienna experienced a deep partial eclipse, with around 85 percent of the Sun covered at maximum.</p><p>But many spectators never got to see that theoretical maximum.</p><p>The sun was setting too quickly.</p><p>As the moon covered more of the solar disk, the remaining sunlight became lower, softer and increasingly orange.
