Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday (August 27) Lake Ontario will continue to be called by that name after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was renaming it as &quot;Lake America.&quot;&quot;The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America,&quot; Carney said on X.&quot;Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario, then, now and always.&quot;In a post on X, Carney said the name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari&#x27;io, meaning &quot;the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,&quot; and noted that the name predates both Canada and the United States.One of the five Great Lakes of North America, Lake Ontario borders both the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York.Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed last week with each side ‌blaming the ⁠other for derailing three days of intensive negotiations.Boats moved across Lake Ontario and people gathered along Toronto&#x27;s waterfront as Canadians reacted to Trump&#x27;s proposal.Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew mocked the suggested name change.&quot;You know when like a rock band is really over the hill and you see them like in a casino playing some song from like fifty years ago? I think that&#x27;s the part of Donald Trump&#x27;s presidency we&#x27;re at now,&quot; Kinew said.&quot;Like he thought he had a real hit, a real golden oldie with the Gulf of Mexico and he&#x27;s trying to bring back that. He&#x27;s trying to play the hits for his base but I think everybody here thinks it&#x27;s a little sad and it&#x27;s not his best work.&quot;Along the Lake Ontario shoreline, 69-year-old Alberta resident Rude Bergen backed Carney&#x27;s position.&quot;It&#x27;s ridiculous. I&#x27;m behind Carney all the way and I&#x27;m from Alberta,&quot; Bergen said.Kieran Wright, a 76-year-old visitor from England, said the name should remain unchanged.&quot;It should be left as it was originally. There&#x27;s no reason, just bullying.
