OCCIDENTAL MINDORO — The town of Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro is running out of basic goods, particularly food, following severe flooding there, its mayor said Sunday.

In an interview with DZMM Teleradyo, Mayor Glicerio "EK" Almero III said that there is almost nothing left to buy in stores across the town.

"Ang request po namin, of course, yung pagkain kasi po talagang nagkakaubusan po dito," said Almero. "Sa ibang tindahan po ay wala ng mabili."

The shortage of basic goods has been attributed to delayed deliveries as strong waves kept ships from Batangas from docking at the Abra de Ilog Port.

However, the mayor remains hopeful that a fresh supply of goods will start to arrive in the coming days. Some vessels managed to dock on Friday.

A price freeze is currently in effect in Mamburao following the declaration of a state of calamity.

Almero acknowledged that the municipality’s funds are not enough to meet the needs of residents affected by the effects of recent storms and habagat.

Although the provincial government and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have already sent aid, the mayor said it is still insufficient as many families are in need, especially those who lost their livelihoods.

Almero is appealing to the national government to help the town recover from the calamity.

"Regardless of the amount of help ay talagang badly needed po," Almero stressed.

Damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Mamburao is now estimated at P55 million.
