MANILA (UPDATE) - Tropical cyclone Nika (international name: Toraji) has weakened into a severe tropical storm as it moved over the coast of Ilocos Sur, the state weather bureau said Monday night.

In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Nika was last located 80 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 180 kph.

The cyclone follows the northwestward track at 30 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2, where gale-force winds are expected within 24 hours, remains hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Abra.

Signal No. 1, meanwhile, is raised over La Union, the northwestern portion of Pangasinan, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, benguet, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, and the northwestern portion of Isabela.

Heavy to intense rains may persist over Ilocos Norte and Cagayan, while moderate to heavy rains may be experienced over Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Isabela, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Batanes until Tuesday.

PAGASA warned of flooding and landslide in high-risk areas.

PAGASA said Nika will continue moving west northwest over the West Philippine Sea and exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday morning.

But before Nika’s exit, a tropical depression could enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Tuesday and would be named Ofel.

It will continuously intensify while crossing the Philippine Sea. It may reach typhoon strength before making landfall over northern or central Luzon late Thursday or early Friday.
