Magnitude 5.0 quake jolts Surigao del Sur, aftershock of M7.4 quake

A magnitude 5.0 quake jolted Surigao del Sur at 5:16 a.m. Monday, an aftershock of the powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that rocked the same area last December.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said the earthquake had a depth of 28 kilometers and was felt at Intensity 5 in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, Intensity 4 in Bislig City and Intensity 3 in Boston, Davao Oriental. 

"This is still an aftershock of magnitude 7.4 earthquake last December 2...Masasabi lang na bagong lindol kapag malayo sa epicenter ng previous. We would still expect aftershocks pero pakonti na lang ito," Bacolcol said. 

He said Phivolcs has recorded 9,129 aftershocks from that earthquake last year.

Government authorities have yet to report any damage to infrastructure or injury due to the latest quake. 

"'Yung mga structure na na-damage nung December quake baka totally madamage na with this aftershock," Bacolcol said.

He urged authorities not to allow locals to use infrastructure that show visible damage until further consultation with city or municipal engineers.
