Volleyball star Maraño displays strength after year with psoriasis

<p>MANILA -- After a year of living with psoriasis, volleyball star Aby Maraño expressed her pride at how she has dealt with the adversity and stress brought by the skin disease.</p><p>Maraño revealed her diagnosis in February 2019, but refused to let it stop her from playing the sport she loves. In April, Maraño posted a picture showing the patches caused by the chronic condition, and said &quot;my confidence is greater than my insecurities.&quot;</p><p>&quot;Hindi naman kami nakakahawa,&quot; Maraño said at the time. &quot;Hindi rin ito sumpa.&quot;</p><p>In a New Year’s Eve post on Instagram, Maraño said her diagnosis was “life-changing.”</p><blockquote Stress and unhealthy lifestyle may trigger my sickness,” she explained.</p><p>“I had to overcoming my insecurities, I had to accept how people can be rude about me and my disease, I had to deal with people who doesn’t have knowledge about psoriasis, I had to stay positive even if it wasn’t easy at all, I had to deal receiving profanity and awful words from people who cannot accept me for who I am when I play ball,” she added.</p><p>Maraño was admittedly challenged by the changes she had to make in her lifestyle and diet, as well as in her routine. “I went crazy for all the expensive food and medicines,” she said.</p><p>But the national team captain proudly showed off her skin – patches and all – in her post, and declared that she was ending 2019 on a strong note, and entering 2020 “with a brave heart.” </p><p>“I may have psoriasis,” she said. “But psoriasis don’t have me.”</p><p>Maraño, who has sought to erase the stigma around the disease ever since she was diagnosed, also encouraged her “skinmates” to stay positive.</p><p>“Mess up, then get back up,” she said. “Just live your life and always choose to be happy.”</p><p>Despite her diagnosis, Maraño played for F2 Logistics in the Philippine Superliga and skippered the national women’s team that played in the 30th Southeast Asian Games this year.</p><div><em>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com/">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</em></div>
