<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/sports/05/21/052117-melindo.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">Milan Melindo finally captures world championship gold after knocking out Akira Yaegashi in Japan. <cite>Santino Honasan, <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com/boxing/photos" target="_blank">ABS-CBN Sports</a></cite></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>Third time&#x27;s the charm for Filipino boxer Milan Melindo.</p><p>In his third attempt at a world championship, the ALA Boxing standout finally captured gold after knocking out defending regular IBF light flyweight world champion Akira Yaegashi in just one round, Sunday evening at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan. </p><p>Melindo, who came into the fight as the interim IBF 108-pound champion, outstruck the regular champion inside the first round, dropping Yaegashi twice before landing a vicious 1-2 combination that sent the hometown boy down to the mat for a third time. </p><p>Separated from his senses, Yaegashi could barely sit back up as the referee waved off the fight at the 2:45 mark of round one. </p><ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com/boxing/news/2017/05/21/crawford-stays-unbeaten-10-round-rout-diaz-26290">READ: Crawford stays unbeaten with 10-round rout of Diaz</a></li></ul><p>It&#x27;s been a long road to the title for Melindo. The 29-year old Cagayanon challenged for a world title on two separate occasions twice before, falling short both times.
